On Thursday September 13, 2018 we held the 67th annual CT HFMA Annual meeting entitled “The Balancing Act – Disruption, Collaboration, Leadership & Engagement” at the Aqua Turf in Southington Connecticut. The event is always the highlight of the year and this one did not disappoint with well over one hundred attendees.

The day began at 7:00am with an Early Careerist CFO Networking session. Attendees heard from David Bittner, CFO Trinity Health New England, Sue Martin, CFO Middlesex Health System and Charles Johnson, CFO Hartford Healthcare. The discussion demonstrated just how small healthcare is with the fact that both David and Charles had worked with the same individual in the midwest many years ago as well as how all three of the CFO’s paths involved varied experiences that each felt provided them great value in their current role.

The full program kicked off with an introduction of the 2018/2019 Chapter Officers and Board of Directors by President Megan Budd followed by a panel discussion of physicians that primarily hold administrative roles currently. The panel was moderated by Sara Barr of Washashore Writting and included a distinguished panel of physicians:

  • Dr. Ajay Kumar, Regional Vice President, Medical Affairs, Hartford Hospital
  • Dr. Russ Munson, CT Medical Director, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care
  • Dr. Wayne Rawlins, Vice President & Chief Medical Officer, ConnectiCare, Inc. & Affiliates
  • Dr. Kenneth J Robinson, Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Hartford Hospital
  • Dr. Prathibha Varkey, President and CEO, Yale New Haven Health North East Medical Group

The group provided a lively discussion about the commonalities within distinct types of entities they represented while at the same time outlining the different approaches being taken. The audience was engaged, and it felt if the session was much too short.

The legislative update this year was delivered by Vincent Candelora, CT State Representative for Durham, Guilford, North Branford, Wallingford. The Representative provided the audience with an overview of topics brought up during the legislative session. The audience was very engaged in the discussion surrounding issues surrounding addition treatment and the growing opiate epidemic.

The morning sessions concluded with Dr. Wendy Shumway presenting “The Geometry of Leadership – The Golden Circle Meets the Triangle of Power”. Dr. Shumway guided the audience through how leadership is a mindset and inspired leadership can (and does) exist at every level of our organizations. She pointed out that harnessing this mindset can assist organizations and individuals to thwart burnout and find a way to thrive in a difficult environment.

Just before lunch Sarah Ginnetti, the Chapter Immediate Past President had the honor to present two Lifetime Membership Awards to two individuals that have served the Connecticut Chapter and Region One of HFMA with passion. Both Lou DAurio and Joe Pajor have represented everything it means to be a committed volunteer to HFMA and it was a pleasure and an honor to provide them with this recognition.

Immediately following lunch, a difficult slot for most speakers was the day’s keynote speaker, Mr. Jeff Johnson, Chief Marketing Officer and Motivational Coach. Jeff lead the group through several hands on activities highlighting the power of leadership and teamwork as well as handing out some great giveaways!

The day ended with a team building activity, Jenga Tournament and Cocktail Reception.

It was a great day filled with education, networking and comradery. A great time was had by all and we look forward to seeing you all there next year!
